AI's Insatiable Hunger for IPv4 - The Hidden Scarcity Crisis

🤖 AI’s Insatiable Hunger for IPv4: The Hidden Scarcity Crisis

Here’s something weird happening in the IPv4 market. While prices are dropping for big blocks, AI companies are quietly hoarding IP addresses like crazy. Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and other tech giants are grabbing millions of IPv4 addresses to build their NVIDIA H200 clusters and massive AI training farms.

🌍 The Global AI Divide

Only 32 countries actually host AI data centers. This means developing countries like Kenya have to rent IPv4 space from overseas at crazy high prices. It’s expensive and creates delays - not exactly ideal when you’re trying to build your tech infrastructure.

⚡️ AI Eats Power and IPs

AI data centers are power-hungry beasts. They use 10 times more electricity per search than regular data centers. And they need tons of IPv4 addresses to back all that infrastructure. Get this - Nvidia’s AI servers planned for 2027 alone could use 134 TWh per year. That’s as much electricity as all of Ireland uses!

🔄 Quick Fixes Don’t Work

People tried using CGNAT (basically IP sharing technology) to stretch IPv4 addresses further. But it crashes under AI workloads and breaks things like video calls and gaming. IPv6 adoption is still stuck at around 25% worldwide, so we’re still dependent on IPv4.

💡 The Bottom Line

Sure, IPv4 prices look cheap right now (/16 blocks are down 33%). But don’t be fooled. We need 298 GW of data center capacity by 2030 - that’s five times what we have today. Even Europe’s 22% capacity growth can’t keep up with what AI companies need. IPv6 is the real solution, but until everyone adopts it, we’re heading for an IPv4 shortage.
