🌐 RIPE 90: Lisbon Hosts Global Internet Infrastructure Dialogue 🇵🇹

From May 12-16, Lisbon hosted one of the biggest internet infrastructure conferences of the year. RIPE 90 brought together 820 people from 55 countries - 648 showed up in person while 172 joined online.

🔁 IPv6 Has Some Serious Problems

Here’s something scary: researchers found that sending one simple ping could trigger 250,000 replies. That’s a massive routing loop problem that needs fixing immediately.

⚖️ Time to Update How We Run the Internet

There were big debates about updating Internet Coordination Policy 2 (ICP-2). Basically, the rules for how we manage the internet need updating to match how things work today.

🔐 Better Registration Data

People talked a lot about improving RIPE NCC registration data using “Know Your Customer” standards. This would make the data more accurate and transparent.

🌍 Learning from Real-World Failures

The conference looked at real cases like the big power outage in Spain and Portugal. These examples show how well the internet handles crises and why we need to be prepared.

👋 Leadership Changes

RIPE 90 said goodbye to some key people: William Sylvester (Database working group), Peter Wehrle (IoT), and Doris Hauser (DNS). Thanks for all their hard work!

🗺️ Planning Ahead

The RIPE NCC General Meeting happened at the same time, focusing on plans for 2027-2031. They talked about registry services, getting the community involved, and new technology.

RIPE 90 showed that the internet community is serious about building a secure, reliable, and accessible digital future.
